The Cowan girls varsity basketball team won a nail-biter Tuesday night at home, edging Eastern 36-34. The game was tight throughout, with Cowan leading by a single point at the end of the first quarter and by two points at halftime, before Eastern led 26-24 going into the fourth quarter. Elizabeth Sizemore led the Blackhawks with 15 points on five 3-point field goals. Savannah Hall had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds while adding five steals and three assists. Alyssa Stevens pitched in with a team-high five assists. A key to Cowan's victory was its free-throw shooting. The Blackhawks converted eight of their 10 attempts. Because of Eastern's roster limitations, the junior varsity contest was limited to two quarters, ending in a 16-16 tie. Corah Wright and Kennedee Coffey scored six points apiece and Khloe Shaw grabbed a team-high five rebounds for Cowan. The Blackhawks return to action with a girls-boys varsity doubleheader at Daleville on Friday. The girls game starts at 6 p.m.
